5 SETTER: Sinner’s Shanghai Update, Eala Faces a Penalty, & More

Tennis's biggest near-term uncertainty is whether an injured Sinner plays Shanghai, which could hand Zverev the World No. 1 ranking.

• Sinner's Shanghai limbo: World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, out since his July 12 Wimbledon final loss with a knee injury, hadn't decided on Shanghai (Oct 7-18) as of Thursday; Zverev has cut the ranking gap to roughly 1,300 points and could hit No. 1 by late October.
• Navarro ends season for health: Emma Navarro, 25, shut down her 2026 season citing diagnoses of RED-S and Hashimoto's Disease after playing 88 matches through 2025; she targets a return at the Australian Open.
